A Crimewatch appeal has sparked public response to a violent armed raid at Tesco in Tring.
Victims who were shot during the raid spoke publicly of their ordeal for the first time on the BBC One show on Wednesday (November 19).

Both the police and Crimewatch have since received a number of calls which will now be sifted through and hope
fully used to track down the gunmen who struck on Tuesday, September 16.

DCI Mick Hanlon, heading the investigation, said: "Both the Incident Room and Crimewatch have had a reasonable response to the appeal. Now we have to look into the calls.

"We are grateful to have had such extensive coverage."

During the television show a security guard, who was ambushed as he filled up the supermarket cashpoints, and a shopper who tried to help him, told how they thought their lives were over during the horrific attack at the store on London Road.

The guard from Group Four Securicor, said: "I always looked at Tring as one of the sorts of sites I liked doing and never thought anything like this would happen there."

He described how the masked gunman, who was wearing a Tesco luminous vest, followed him into the cashpoint filling area outside the store.

"I wasn't scared. I didn't feel threatened. We are trained to deal with attacks, so we can come out of them safely," he said.

The shopper, who visited the store everyday before work, realised something was wrong and stepped in. "I don't know why, I just ran in and grabbed him. Bear-hugged him," he said.

In the scramble that followed the thief first shot the shopper before turning the gun on the security guard. He said: "I thought that was it. Thoughts started going through my mind, things I hadn't done with my life."

The gunman then walked away but returned for a second time to get the money.

The shopper said: "I thought he was going to finish me off. I managed to get up and run into the store. I honestly thought I was going to get a bullet in my back."

After grabbing the cash the masked man made off on a motorbike with an accomplice. They transferred into a white van in nearby Treehanger Close and sped away.

The victims, who were both shot in the legs, told how their lives have been affected since.

The shopper said: "My partner can't be at home alone because she has a fear this guy is going to come back."

While the security guard said he has not been himself since and feels something has been taken away from him.
