Hospital chiefs are celebrating after hitting an 18-week waiting time target six months ahead of schedule.
The government has said that by December hospitals should see at least nine out of ten patients referred to them within 18 weeks.

But West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust achieved the target in July, seeing 90 per cent of admitted patients and 98.5 per cent of non admitted patients within the time limit.

Chief executive Jan Filochowski said: "I am pleased to report that our performance continues to improve, which is excellent news for the patients of west Hertfordshire.

"This provides us with a substantial base from which we can build for the future."

He predicts the achievement will put the trust in a good position to raise its current 'weak' rating to 'fair' in the annual assessment by watchdog the Healthcare Commission.

In July 99 per cent of patients were seen within four hours in A&E, compared with a target of 98 per cent, while targets for cancer care were also hit.
