Residents are being asked to remain calm when a siren is tested at the Buncefield depot.
The 'fairly loud' alarm will sound across the depot and nearby homes next Wednesday, September 3, at 7pm.

The siren will produce a two-tone alarm and then a single tone alarm and last about two minutes.

Henceforth the siren will be tested every six months, on the first Wednesday of March at 2.30pm and the first Wednesday of September at 7pm.

The test is being carried out by oil giant BP, which already stores aviation fuel at the depot and plans to begin storing petrol and diesel.

A spokesperson for BP said: "We have a legal requirement to test the alarm twice a year.

"We wanted to let local residents know this was happening in advance so that when the siren does go off they would not be alarmed and would know it is a test."

In the event of a real emergency the siren will sound and residents are advised to stay indoors with windows and doors closed.
