New system to help cut child abuse

Vital information on alleged child abusers is to be stored in a ground-breaking computer system.
Under the new scheme, by the county council, details of all allegations against adults working with children will be held in the same set of computer records.

Information on alleged abusers used to be held in several different places, including police files.

Carol Taylor, Head of Child Protection at Herts County Council, said: "Although we cannot always prevent a child from being abused, this system should mean that we can intervene to stop abusive adults committing further offences against children."

The new scheme, called the Allegations Management System (AMS), was launched earlier this year and has also attracted interest from other local authorities in the UK.

AMS works by keeping a record of all stages of a child abuse allegation so it can be securely held, retrieved and analysed
